if you live in Oakland and you like to dance you already know that “The People” monthly party is the place to go sweat until 2am. real good folks + butt-shaking music + good food = a good time in my book.

for their next party, the organizers of “the People” invited me to curate an “Afro-Diasporic Food Court.” so i invited 6 other chefs to share some tasty treats inspired by staples, cooking techniques, and distinctive dishes of the African Diaspora.

so come join us on Saturday, April 25. that’s Saturday April 25. and get your grub, dance, and love on.

click here to check out a recent article that the East Bay Express published about VSK. and ignore the date that the printed for the above party. it is on Saturday, April 25. see you there.

Sweet, Sour, & Spicy Blackberry Limeade
Yield: 6 to 8 servings

Soundtrack:Unstoppable” by Santogold from Santogold

This is a drink that I made while living in Brooklyn. It gave me a lot of comfort on those New York City-will-wear-you-out days. Remove the lime slices if storing in the refrigerator for more than a few hours, as they will make the drink bitter.

5 cups filtered water
1/2 cup agave nectar
1/2 cup freshly lime juice (from about 10 - 12 limes)
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
About 1/2 pound (10 oz) of frozen blackberries
1 large organic lime, ends cut off and sliced thinly lengthwise

  • In a large pitcher combine the water, agave nectar, lime juice, and the cayenne pepper. Stir well. Add the blackberries and the lime slices, pour into a pitcher, and refrigerate until cool. Serve in slender, clear glasses.

the only thing that could top being featured in Jet this week is getting some hometown love. and boy did i get a lot of it:

*Edible Memphis Magazine wrote a flattering review of VSK (see above).

*The Commercial Appeal, Memphis’ daily newspaper, published a feature article on Wednesday (click here to read it).

*The Memmphis Flyer, the city’s largest alternative newsweekly, just published a piece about VSK (click here to read it).

Big up to Ida B. Wells.

when i was growing up all heads of households in my family had a subscription to Jet. and they still do. so you can imagine how elated i was when my publicist informed me that the magazine wanted to write an article about my new book. more than being featured in the new york times magazine or any other media outlet, landing in “the jet magazine” (as my granny used to call it) says i made it big time to most of my family. seriously, i love this piece.
