in my friend Anna Lappe’s latest book, Diet for a Hot Planet, she plunges into the heart of this era’s newest food fight with a simple message: “if we are serious about addressing climate change, we have to talk about food.” i have been reading it over the past week, and it is hot (pun intended!). get it here.

i’m excited to make an appearance on The Martha Stewart Show with my friend and mentor Alice Waters to help promote her new book, In the Green Kitchen: Techniques To Learn By Heart.
As a part of 2008’s Slow Food Nation Alice curated “The Green Kitchen,” bringing together acclaimed chefs from around the world to demonstrate the preparation of simple, artful, sustainable food for the daily dinner table. I showed the audience how to husk fresh corn and demonstrated my recipe for sautéed jalapeño corn. After each demo, chefs were photographed by acclaimed photographer Christopher Hirsheimer, and the techniques, recipes, and portraits were compiled in this book. When Martha invited Alice to come on the show, she invited Executive Chef of Chez Panisse Café Cal Peternell, chef and cookbook author Scott Peacock, and me to join her. I will send an update once i find out when the episode airs.
I had the privilege of making an appearance in and serving as an adviser for Catherine Gund’s latest documentary film–What’s on Your Plate. The film follows two eleven-year-old multi-racial city kids (Sadie and Safiyah) as they explore their place in the food chain. I just screened the film for students and community members during my artist residency at the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana, and folks loved it. If you live in the Los Angeles area, come out to UCLA’s Hammer Museum on Thursday April 1st for a screening followed by a panel discussion with me, Catherine Gund, Sadie Hope-Gund, and actors/activists Esai Morales and Ed Begley, Jr.
I had a great time this week at the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana as an artist-in-residence at Allen Hall/Unit One. Had lots of meaningful conversations with students and community members, and made some great connections. In addition to designing activities for every evening, I created a menu that was prepared by the dining staff. Over 750 students and community folks showed up. I also spoke to students at the U of I Laboratory High School and gave a presentation at the African American Cultural Center. Great time.
